There’s a unique kind of magic in watching young leaders take the reins of a movement. On BellRinger Weekend, that energy will come alive in a big way, especially through the student-led momentum driving our local high schools.
This year, the BellRinger High School Leadership Council is on a mission to bring more youth Riders to the starting line, raise vital funds, and build a tighter-knit community dedicated to ending cancer. We sat down with two student leaders on the council—Ben VanFossen (Gonzaga College High School) and Audrey Holmes (Connelly School of the Holy Child)—to talk about personal motivations, finish line feelings, and what it takes to inspire the next generation of BellRinger Riders.
Riding for Family, Riding for the DMV
For both Ben and Audrey, the decision to clip in for 25 miles isn’t just about the physical challenge—it’s deeply personal.
“Two years ago, my mom was diagnosed with kidney cancer and received her treatment at Lombardi,” shares Ben. “Thankfully, she’s doing much better now. BellRinger is my chance to support the cancer center that played such an important role in my family’s life and to help ensure that others can access the care they need.”
Audrey’s connection stems from family, too. After watching her mom ride two years ago, she officially joined the 25-mile ride last year. She rides in honor of her grandfather—a prostate cancer survivor and “one of my favorite people.”
That personal drive is paired with a clear understanding of why local action matters. As Ben highlights, having access to world-class care right in our backyard is critical. “You have a much better chance of beating your cancer when you’re treated at a comprehensive cancer center, and Georgetown Lombardi is one of the best there is.”
Starting Line Spark & Finish Line Magic
Ask anyone who has participated in BellRinger, and they’ll tell you the atmosphere is unforgettable.
“My favorite part of the Ride last year was seeing everyone at the starting line,” Audrey recalls. “The energy was super high, and there were people and bikes as far as you could see in the chute. It was freezing cold, but it didn’t even matter because everyone was so excited.”
And for Ben, that early-morning cold gave way to an overwhelming sense of shared purpose at the finish. “Crossing the finish line, seeing everyone there cheering, supporting one another, and celebrating together was genuinely inspiring. Most importantly, realizing what this incredible group of Riders was able to contribute to cancer research—and how many people their efforts will help—was truly remarkable.”
Big Goals for 2026
The BellRinger High School Leadership Council isn’t stopping at past success. They’re setting high bars for 2026—both on the road and in their school halls:
- 50+ High School Riders: Ben is setting an ambitious goal for high s participation this year, aiming to organize social events and expand outreach across DMV schools.
- Building School Clubs: Audrey is working on starting an official BellRinger club at Holy Child to recruit more of her peers to join her team, Pedal for Hope.
- Community Connection: Both leaders want to build camaraderie among high schoolers, keeping high energy on the course while keeping the mission at the center.
“I want students to understand that they’re not riding for themselves,” Ben notes. “They’re part of a larger effort to support people who are fighting cancer, and every dollar they raise helps someone battling this disease.”
Audrey agrees, emphasizing the joy that comes with the cause. “BellRinger is more than just a bike ride. It’s a community coming together to make a difference. I want to show how fun and rewarding the experience is.”
